6.  When, how, and by whom was Pine Hill Swim and Tennis club get started?

1973PineHillMensWebPine Hill’s beginning was much like that of PTC. A group of tennis players were contacted by Madeline Russell and “rented” the Russell’s single court located on Mirick Road by helping out with the court maintenance.

In 1966, when Madeline Russell decided to sell the land, The Claghorn’s bought the court and adjacent land (15 acres), and then in turn, sold the court and half the land to a group of seven families who wanted to form the Pine Hill Swim and Tennis Club (Howe, McNair, Claghorn, Milton, Washburn, Trostel & Webster). They solicited 30 members, collected a bond, and, as they say, ”the rest is history”.

Two 10’ x 16’ motel cottages were purchased and much volunteer work was given to get the club ready as soon as possible. A second tennis court was added and the original court redone with the swimming pool christened at a party where all the members jumped in at once in late July 1967.
